Returning home after a stroke can be a challenging transition for both the stroke survivor and you as a carer. Adjusting to any changes in your daily lives can take time, and many people will not return straight away to their usual routines.

In terms of recovery, the biggest improvements usually take place in the early weeks or months. However, recovery may continue for years.

Neuroplasticity (re-wiring the brain) is a part of the recovery process that begins after a stroke.

Help with your home environment

It may be that you need to make adaptations to your home, including adding equipment and aids, to help make everyday tasks easier.

Or it may be that the person who had a stroke is unable to return to their home after leaving hospital. We have information on finding alternative accommodation, such as a care home.

Please remember, whatever you are facing on the journey to recovery, the Stroke Support Helpline is here to support you every step of the way. Simply give us a call on 0303 3033 100 or email helpline@stroke.org.uk(link sends email).
