The Stroke Association actively funds innovative research into ways of improving the whole stroke pathway.

Using animals in research

Most of the research we support involves people, but we need to learn more about stroke. Using animals in research concerns many people but could it help us increase our understanding of stroke.

You can find information on how many of our projects involve animals and which species on our research statistics page.

Using stem cells in research

Stem cell technology has the potential to improve our knowledge of stroke. It is exciting but also controversial. Stem cells can differentiate into a wide range of different cells. They can repair or replace cells that are damaged, providing a route to recovery.

Our peer review process

To ensure that we fund high-quality research, we have a rigorous, independent peer-
review process.

Our confidentiality and conflicts of interest policy

Our peer reviewers must declare any potential conflicts of interest with the
applicants, co-applicants or collaborators associated with an application that they
have been asked to review. If a conflict of interest is confirmed, their invitation to
participate in the review of that particular application will be withdrawn.

Our research

Our funding allows researchers to find new ways to stop stroke happening, and treat and support people to find their way back to life after stroke.

Campaign with us

We are the force for change. By listening to and working with people affected by stroke, we can drive improvements in stroke prevention.
