Working to raise awareness of Atrial fibrillation

Stroke is the fourth biggest cause of death in the UK and the leading cause of complex adult disability. Atrial fibrillation (AF), increases stroke risk by up to five times yet can go undiagnosed due to lack of symptoms.

The Stroke Association and OMRON Healthcare UK are working in partnership to raise awareness of AF and its link to stroke.

Together, we aim to:

  • Help people understand their risk of stroke
  • Encourage regular blood pressure and heart rhythm monitoring
  • Support earlier detection of AF
  • Provide trusted education and resources

Alwyn's story

In July 2025, Alwyn was at work when he suddenly felt "odd". What followed was a stroke, and a diagnosis he had never heard of before: AF.

Like many people, Alwyn had experienced symptoms for years without realising what they meant. It was only after his stroke that AF was detected.

"So many people have no clue what AF is. I tell everybody about my stroke. I want people to understand the risks and catch it earlier if they can."

Now, he's sharing his story to help others recognise the risks earlier and take action before it's too late.

What you can do today

There are simple steps you can take to better understand and manage your risk:

  1. Know your numbers
Checking your blood pressure regularly can help you stay informed about your health.
  2. Check your pulse
You can check your heart rhythm manually to spot signs of irregularity. Learn how to do a manual pulse check
  3. Monitor your heart health at home
Some clinically validated home monitors and ECG can:
    • Measure blood pressure
    • Detect irregular heart rhythms
    • Flag possible AF
  4. Speak to a healthcare professional
Only a healthcare professional can diagnose AF. If you notice anything unusual, it's important to seek medical advice.

Some blood pressure monitors now include technology that can detect signs of AF during routine measurements.

This can help:

  • Identify irregular heart rhythms early
  • Prompt timely medical checks
  • Support ongoing monitoring between appointments

OMRON Healthcare UK develops clinically validated devices designed to support home monitoring and help people take a more active role in managing their heart health.
