Life after stroke support for everyone

There is now a national policy framework for stroke in Scotland. But this needs to be matched by improved delivery on the ground.

We are at the beginning of what we hope will be real change for the 10,000 people in Scotland admitted to hospital annually with a stroke.

Our Thriving after stroke campaign aims to ensure that everyone affected by stroke has access to the rehabilitation and life after stroke support they need.

Our Thriving after stroke briefing

A look through the evidence, stroke survivor experience and Health Board delivery of longer-term support in Scotland.

Three calls

To help everyone thrive after stroke, every stroke survivor should:

  • Leave hospital with a personalised rehabilitation plan.
  • Have contact information for ongoing support from stroke services.
  • Receive a review of their progress and needs six months after their stroke.

What is life after stroke support?

Life after stroke support is a crucial - but often overlooked- part of stroke rehabilitation. It complements core therapies such as physiotherapy to provide practical, social and emotional support. We believe the above measures provide a framework from which almost everything in life after stroke support can flow.

Life after stroke support helps to rebuild lives. Stroke survivors can regain independence, reduce their risk of a further stroke, and improve their confidence, self-esteem and physical and mental wellbeing.

There is evidence for the three things we are calling for to be put into practice urgently.

Our Thriving after stroke briefing looks at the evidence, stroke survivor experience and Health Board delivery of longer-term support, to press for change.

This sits alongside our UK Thriving after stroke report, which includes broader evidence for life after stroke support and testimonials from healthcare professionals to its effectiveness.
